What is ADAS
ADAS standas for Autonomous Driver Assistant System. ADAS is an active and passive safety system developed to reduce human errors while driving. It assists the driver to prevent car accidents and serious impacts of those can't be avoided.
Who has categorised ADAS
Actually adas is categorised by an association called SAE, Society of Automotive Engineers. This is a global association of more than 128,000 engineers related to automobile and aerospace engineering.
How ADAS is categorised
ADAS is categorised into 6 Levels depending on level of automation. The levels starts from Level 0 and goes up to Level 5. Level 0 ADAS has actually no automation, It comprises only passive features like park assist, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, ABS etc. In Level 0 ADAS, the vehicle has a bunch of sensors who only provides surrounding data to driver but can't take any driving control by itself.
Level 1 ADAS can take control of only one thing, either lateral or longitudinal. The vehicle can brake and accelerate automatically or it can steer left or right automatically. But can't do both acceleration-braking and steering automatically. It comprises features like brake assist, adaptive cruise control or lane keep assist. Or if the vehicle can read the speed limit and slow down to match in case of over speeding.
Level 2 ADAS can take control of two things, lateral and longitudinal. It can do both acceleration-braking and lane keeping simultaneously. It comprises features like brake assist, adaptive cruise control and lane keep assistant. Level 3 ADAS is actually automatic. Along with automatic control of all sides, the Level 3 ADAS has decision making capability. It can read surrounding and make overtakes at suitable situation.
Level 4 and level 5 ADAS are properly automatic driving systems. Level 4 ADAS can take you through heavy city traffic automatically, but still a driver is required to take control at tricky situation. That's why steering wheel and accelerator - brake puddles are provided. Level 5 ADAS doesn't have steering wheel and puddles. We can count all seats as passanger seats. Actually level 4 and level 5 ADAS are concept.
