1. Mahindra Thar 4×2.
2. Cheaper by 3 lakh.
3. 1.5 L diesel engine.
Maruti is all set to launch the off road SUV Jimny in coming auto expo which will be a strong competitor of Thar, but price of Jimny will be less. Meanwhile Mahindra is also all set to defend Jimny with a new variant of Thar that will be 3 lakh cheaper than regular Thar.
Here Mahindra has done something really interesting to reduce the price of Thar. Indian tax system on automobile is so much complicated. Talking perticular about Thar, as it has 2.2L diesel engine, 28% GST and 22% Compensation CESS is applied on it.
So in order to reduce tax, Mahindra has started offering a 1.5 liger diesel engine with Thar which is actually 1497cc. So it met the below 1.5L category in which 28% GST and 3% Compensation CESS is applied. So here Mahindra saved a great amount.
Again if you have noticed that, the engine of Thar is reduced. So manufacturing cost of a smaller engine will be less as compare to a big 2.2L engine. So this becomes the second factor from where Mahindra can save money amd make Thar cheaper.
The third and the most effective factor from where Mahindra saved money is the drive train. Now this Thar will be a RWD vehicle instead a 4×4. So there will be less technology and mechanism for drive train which can reduce the price of Thar.
If you are thinking this will impact the performance, let me inform you that the 1.5 liter engine to be offered with Mahindra Thar is the engine which we have already seen in XUV300. This engine is 115 bhp powerful and makes a maximum 300nm of torque.
Meanwhile the 2.2 liter engine is 130bhp powerful and 300nm torquee. So here Thar looses only 15bhp. But because of smaller engine and low drive train mechanism, the Thar will be wah lighter than regular Thar. So there will be negligible performance variation.
If you are still disappointed with RWD, 4×4 is only required only for hardcore off-roading. Otherwise RWD is capable enough to come over day to day off road situation. Where the 4×2 drive train will be more fuel efficient too.
In terms of design and stuff like that, Mahindra Thar misses out a 4×4 badging on rear quarter plate and the differential lock mechanism inside the cabin. It gets a free space to keep stuff at the place of diff-lock. Additionally it gets auto start-stop button for batter fuel economy.
